Missouri

The State of Missouri was named after a tribe of Sioux Indians of the state called “Missouris”. “Missouri” means “wooden canoe people” or “he of the big canoe”.

It is also unique for its many caves and excessive amount of fountains in Kansas City.

Religious Historic Sites in Missouri

Missouri plays a significant role in the history of the Latter-day Saint Movement. Today, the Community of Christ headquarters are found in Jackson Missouri. Other churches from this movement have several visitor centers or established historic sites with available tours, including those established by  the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Church of Christ Temple Lot.

Adam-ondi-Ahman

A site of religious significance believed to be the future location where Adam and his righteous posterity will gather in preparation for the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Church of Christ Temple Lot

Joseph Smith prophesied that a temple would be built on this spot prior to the second coming–several sects desire to own this land to fulfill that purpose.

Community of Christ Temple

Located in Independence Missouri, the Community of Christ Temple is a place of prayer open to visitors.

Eight Witness Monument

 

Far West Temple Site

Nicely kept plot of land that preserves corner stones that were set a long time ago in preparation for the fulfillment of a prophecy.

Haun’s Mill

A fairly secluded spot that marks the place where a massacre took place near what was once called Haun’s Mill.

Independence Missouri Visitor Center
A good starting point and location to learn more about the Missouri Church History sites and historical accounts. Ran by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Historic Liberty Jail (Visitors Center)

A partial reconstruction of the jail (where church leaders were incarcerated) sits within the museum located here.

Pioneer Cemetery & Monument

Richmond Missouri has two pioneer cemetery’s of interest to followers of the Latter Day saint movement. Oliver Cowdery is buried in the smaller of the two.
